Manor House School has been praised by the Independent Schools Council (ISC) for the high quality of its teaching, the excellence of its pastoral care, and its skill in identifying and responding to the learning needs of pupils.

These comments were made following the school's most recent inspection by Independent Schools Inspectors (ISI).

In their summary, the inspectors concluded that:

"Pupils achieve good standards and make good progress in their learning. They reach high standards in their personal development. The very good collaborative working of staff, under the very good leadership of the senior management team, in nurturing the development of individual pupils is a key element in the success of the school. The school has few weak features."

The report also found that

"The school has many strengths, the clearest being:
  • The high quality of the provision in the Foundation stage is a valuable platform on which the school builds a beneficial educational experience.
  • All staff embody, in their attitudes and relationships with the pupils, the values of the school and are excellent role models to the pupils. As a result, the pupils through their courteous attitude and behaviour make a significant contribution to the welcoming and happy atmosphere that permeates the school.
  • The pastoral care for individuals is of a high order through provision such as the breakfast and after school clubs and the constant availability of staff to pupils.
  • The school is very good at identifying and responding to the learning needs of pupils and, in a context of very good support and care, creates an educational experience of great benefit to each one."
Among the school's many successes, the quality of teaching was found to meet the needs of all pupils, including those requiring learning support.

The curriculum was also commended for offering a broad and balanced education to all pupils across the full age and ability range. Inspectors found that it contributed effectively to the pupils' intellectual, physical and personal attainment and development and prepared them appropriately for the next stage of their education or employment.

Inspectors also noted that English results in national tests at age 11 were high in relation to pupils' abilities, and well above the national average for maintained primary schools in the previous three years.

Pupils' attainment in national tests at age 14 was also found to be good in relation to their abilities. Results in national tests in English, mathematics and science at age 14 for the last three years were well above the national averages for maintained schools in England.

Pupils were described as confident learners who were at ease working alone, or working in pairs, or in small groups.

Inspectors commented that pupils were well motivated and co-operated very well both with their teachers and with each other.

At a time when poor attendance has become an increasing problem in some schools, the level of pupils' attendance was found to be very good. Inspectors reported that this enabled pupils 'to take full advantage of the opportunities provided by the school.'

Staff were praised for being enthusiastic, generous with their time and very hard-working.

The inspection was carried out in October 2005.
