Three Trips in Three Weeks Reveals Stories of War
News article submitted on 5th March 2009, 13:35

Pupils went on three fact-finding trips in three weeks.History students came face-to-face with Hitler, handled World War I artefacts and experienced life in the trenches during three fact-finding visits.

The pupils went on three trips in three weeks as part of their GCSE History studies.

Their first visit featured an enactment of 'Hitler on Trial' at an exam-busting workshop at Loughborough. At the end of the hearing, pupils voted on whether they thought Hitler was guilty or not guilty of wartime atrocities.

Teacher Mrs Carroll, who accompanied the students to Loughborough, said: "The trial was performed very well, with humour as well as a political view of the Second World War. The pupils learned a lot."

They also picked up some useful tips from an examiner.

This was followed by a visit to the Staffordshire Regiment Museum at Lichfield. Pupils were given an insight into life in the First World War by going into the trenches, trying on military uniforms and even firing a Lee Enfield rifle.

They then spent time at the National Memorial Arboretum where they learned more about conditions for prisoners of war.

Pupil Sam Hart said: "The arboretum helped me to understand the scale of death. The museum about prisoners of war in the Far East was disturbing. I was shocked that human beings could do those things to fellow human beings."

The final visit was to the Leeds Royal Armouries Museum.

Mrs Carroll added: "Visits like this are so important for pupils to develop a greater understanding of the topics they are studying.

"For instance, they understood more about the lives of the soldiers by trying on their armour, by lying down in shell holes and by feeling the weight of a rifle."

The visits took place in February and March 2009.
