French Cafe Opens for Business
News article submitted on 23rd April 2009, 11:33

Pupils tucked into some mouthwatering French foods.Baguettes, pain au chocolat and French cheese were served to pupils at Manor House School – when they became customers in the school’s very own French cafe.

The French cafe opened for one morning only, to give the school’s youngest pupils a chance to practise their French vocabulary and try some traditional French food.

Pupils from the school’s Pre-Prep classes, aged four to seven, used the French words they had learnt in lessons to ask for items such as butter, jam and cheese.

At Manor House School, pupils as young as five learn to speak French and are taught about French culture, as part of the curriculum.

The Government plans to introduce language learning into all Key Stage 2 classrooms – for children aged seven and above - by the beginning of the next academic year.

French teacher Mrs Marie-Line Paumard said: “At Manor House School, we are ahead of the game when it comes to language learning for very young pupils.

“We firmly believe that children should enjoy and study languages from an early age. Fun events like the French cafe capture their imagination and feed their love of languages.”
