Girls Have a Head for Business
News article submitted on 14th May 2009, 13:47

Girls at Manor House School have proved they have a head for business – by making hundreds of pounds on the stock market.

In a task that would not have been out of place on TV show ‘The Apprentice’, GCSE Business Studies students were each given £1,000 of virtual money to invest in a share portfolio on the stock market.

While many of the boys lost their money, three girls emerged as the most successful investors at the end of the 10-week experiment.

Amy Cutler, 15, who almost doubled her money, said: “It took me a while to understand how the stock market worked but, after that, it got quite exciting. Everyone was really competitive, especially the boys.

“The whole exercise was a really good idea – it was fun but we learnt something as well. I know now that the stock market is a good way to make money but also an easy place to lose it!”

The three students with the highest profits at the end of the 10 weeks were Amy, Vicki Cotterill and Louise Tomlinson. All three were presented with certificates and chocolate eggs.

Headteacher Ian Clews said: “The exercise made students aware of the workings of the stock exchange and some of the risks involved. It also proved that both girls and boys can thrive in the business world.”
