Learning on the Move for Younger Pupils
News article submitted on 2nd July 2009, 13:14
Visits to three local attractions helped younger pupils to learn more about the world around them.
Pupils from the school's Pre-Prep department visited Stonehurst Farm, Charnwood Museum and Calke Abbey during the summer term.
At Stonehurst Farm, pupils handled small animals, such as rabbits and guinea pigs, and were encouraged to think about what the animals needed to be healthy and happy. They also got the chance to feed farm animals, including goats and sheep, try their hands at pond-dipping, take a look at egg production, and ride on the farm tractor.
This was followed by a visit to Charnwood Museum, where pupils were asked to compare items from the past with those from the present day.
The hands-on visit gave pupils a chance to try out a range of old-fashioned toys, including humming tops, skittles, and Jacob's ladders. The children discussed the materials used to make these toys and how they differed from modern playthings.
There was also a story-telling session.
A trip to Calke Abbey tied in with pupils' classroom studies on growing and change. Kindergarten pupils followed the 'Hungry Caterpillar Trail' while J1 pupils took part in an exercise entitled 'How Does Your Garden Grow?'
Teacher Angela Taylor said: "All three visits were invaluable to the pupils' understanding of the issues we have been talking about in class, particularly our discussions about growing, and about 'then and now."
