Pupils Strike Gold on School Trip
News article submitted on 8th October 2009, 14:12

Teacher Linda Wordsworth talks to children about the exhibits.Pupils struck gold – literally – when they visited one of the country’s most important collections of Iron Age coins.

A selection of the gold coins - which made national headlines when they were first discovered in Leicestershire - went on display at Ashby Museum.

The pupils, from the children’s M forms, were able to look closely at the coins.

The visit tied in with their history studies on Anglo-Saxons and Celts.

Teacher Ann Dennis, who accompanied the children, said: “This was a fabulous opportunity to see a part of one of the most significant historical finds to be made in Leicestershire and indeed the country.

“Visits like this enhance the pupils’ learning experience and, in this case, certainly helped to bring history to life.”

More than 5,000 gold and other coins, known as the Hallaton treasure, were discovered in Hallaton in 2000 by an enthusiast with a metal detector.

The haul also included jewellery, a Roman helmet and a variety of ornaments dating back to the period before the Roman conquest, which took place in the first century.

It is thought to be one of the most important British finds relating to the Iron Age.

The collection was acquired by Leicestershire City Council in 2008.
