History on a Plate for Hungry Pupils
News article submitted on 29th October 2009, 11:42

Making gingerbread.Pupils got a taste of history – literally – when they recreated a famous scene using characters made from gingerbread.

The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophia, was re-enacted by pupils from S5, who used gingerbread to cut out their own characters and the Archduke’s open top car.

The exercise tied in with pupils’ GCSE studies on the causes of the First World War.

Teacher Mrs Jeanne Carroll said: “In previous years, we have re-enacted what happened on that fateful day in Sarajevo using paper cut-outs of the individuals involved.

“This time, we made the characters out of gingerbread, which also called up on the pupils’ design and technology skills. They loved it – it gave the lesson a whole new dimension, especially as they knew they could eat their work at the end!”

The pupils have since been asked to write their own account of what happened in Sarajevo on the day the Archduke and his wife were assassinated.
