MP Presents Free Maps
News article submitted on 19th November 2009, 9:49
David Taylor MP visited Manor House School to hand out free Ordnance Survey maps to pupils, as part of a nationwide initiative.
Mr Taylor presented maps of the local area to the school’s Year 7 pupils during morning assembly.
The Government initiative is designed to help 11-year-olds get to know their local area and improve their map-reading skills.
Teacher Jeanne Carroll said: “The maps are an invaluable additional resource for classroom exercises, homework, projects and field work. Pupils are gaining real confidence in map reading, which will serve them well for the rest of their lives.”
Using the maps, one of the pupils’ first tasks was to identify the location of the school and the National Forest.
Manor House School has pledged to raise enough money to plant a tree in the National Forest for every pupil, staff member and Governor.
Mrs Carroll added: “The maps helped to reinforce our close relationship with the National Forest, both geographically and in terms of our pledge.”
Mr Taylor visited the school during a day of fundraising, when all pupils paid £1 to dress up as an inhabitant of the mythical Manor House ‘spooky wood’. All proceeds went to the school’s National Forest tree-planting fund.
