Road Safety Officers Take to the Airwaves
News article submitted on 7th January 2010, 13:13

Safety conscious pupils from Manor House School went live on air to spread the important message about road safety.

Gabriel Leeming and Hugo Weir, both aged 10, appeared on community radio station Hermitage FM to talk about their roles as Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs).

The boys told listeners about the importance of JRSOs and about a quiz they had devised to make fellow pupils more aware of road safety issues.

Gabriel said: “A quiz was a good idea because it was fun and it helped us to get the message across. We had lots of entries and gave out prizes at the end.”

Talking about the importance of their role, Hugo said: “If you think about what we’re doing, we are helping to save people’s lives on the roads.”

Since being briefed on their roles at County Hall in October, the boys have been busy with initiatives to promote road safety, including running their own school assemblies.

The boys are two of four JRSOs at Manor House School, along with Jonathan Smallshaw and Holly Bourne.

The Junior Road Safety Officer scheme is run by Leicestershire County Council to promote road safety awareness in and around the county’s schools.

JRSOs are encouraged to promote road safety to their fellow pupils, by maintaining notice boards, and giving out information and advice on being aware and staying safe.

Teacher Penny Brown said: “This scheme is a fantastic way of teaching children about the importance of road safety and is a great way of getting children involved in teaching their friends about how they to can stay safe on our roads.”
